Horizons 2026 Message From the President
At College of the Mainland (COM), we believe education is more than a credential or a degree. It is a pathway to meaningful outcomes. It is how opportunity becomes achievement, learning becomes livelihood and potential turns into payoff for students, families and communities. At COM, our mission is to ensure students gain not only the knowledge to succeed, but also the guidance, encouragement and resources that translate education into real-world results long after they leave our campus.
That belief drives our continued investment in systems of support that surround students from their first day through graduation and beyond. These intentional pathways to success are strengthened by a recently awarded $500,000 planning grant from the Houston Endowment, which will help advance student outcomes through holistic, purpose-driven services. Expanded tutoring and supplemental instruction, flexible course options and personalized pathways are designed to help students stay on track, complete their goals and move confidently toward careers or continued education.
In this issue of Horizons, you’ll see how COM turns education into outcomes across every stage of the student journey. From our new bachelor’s degree in operations management to powerful student success stories, growing community partnerships and expanded university transfer opportunities, COM is strengthening pathways for students to earn credentials that pay off, whether that means entering the workforce or seamlessly transferring to a Texas university to pursue a bachelor’s degree. We are also investing in physical spaces that connect learning directly to workforce needs. The Corporate Training Center provides local industry partners and public servants with a purpose-built environment for skills development and ongoing education. The Public Safety Careers Building will further strengthen our ability to prepare the next generation of Emergency Medical Services, Fire Response and Criminal Justice professionals. These careers serve and protect our community every day.
All of this work is guided by our 2024–2027 Strategic Plan, Legacy of Excellence: A Future of Success, which places student outcomes, employee growth, campus vitality, safety and community engagement at the center of everything we do.
As you explore this issue of Horizons, I hope you are as inspired as I am by the remarkable progress taking place at College of the Mainland. Through thoughtful planning, strong partnerships and a shared commitment to excellence, we are building the support systems that help our students overcome obstacles, stay focused on their goals and realize their dreams. At COM, every student’s success is shared by all of us, because when our students thrive, our entire community moves forward.
Sincerely,
Dr. Helen Castellanos Brewer
President, College of the Mainland
